Tuscany
Tuscany is a very hilly and rich in culture region. It was Etruscan culture's birthplace and later the Renaissance cradle. Among all the Italian landscapes, the Tuscan is the one which people most remember thanks to its attractive hills, the old olive trees shaped during the centuries and the noble cypresses having always inspired Italian and foreign artists.
Situated in the central Italy, Tuscany borders with Liguria in the noth-west, Emilia-Romagna in the north, Marche and Umbria in the east and Lazio in the south.
In the west, Ligurian Sea in the central-northern stretch and Tyrrhenian Sea in the southern coastal stretch lap the 397 km of continental coasts.
Continental coasts are low and sandy, except for some promontories as Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Talamone and Argentario. Tuscan archipelago is composed of seven main islands (Elba, Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) and some smaller islands.
Both in the north and east Tuscany is rimmed by the Apennines, but the region is mainly hilly. However, beyond this ridge, there are the Alpi Apuane, Montagna Pistoiese, Colline Metallifere, Monte Amiata and Cetona massives and the Monte Falterona, birthplace of the Arno River.
If we carefully study the landscape we will recognize a singular soil division due to many alternating hills creating a mosaic of different landscapes, but at the same time extremely fascinating.
In the central part of the region, from the west to the east, the Colline Livornesi, Colline Pisane, the suggestive Balze di Volterra, Montalbano, the famous Colline del Chianti and the Valtiberina.
The southern part of the region is characterised by the Colline Metallifere, Colline della Val di Merse, Crete Senesi, the Colline della Valle dell'Ombrone, Colline dell'Albegna and Fiora, the Tufo Area, the Colline della Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana.
Among the level lands, along the coast, we meet Maremma and Versilia lands; while in the central part of the region the main land is Valdarno developing from the east to the west along the homonymous river.
The regional capital is Florence, the most populated and main historical, artistic and economic-administrative fulcrum; the other provincial capitals are: Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena.
